dang dialup

ARGH! While I am writing this I am unable to connect to my ISP. What do they think they are doing bringing there servers down for maintenance so darn early (11:55PM)? Man this has me ticked off but I guess I may just have to upload this tommorrow. The funny part was that I had just started loading slashdot and then for no apperant reason Windoze bluescreened on me and when it came out of that it froze up totally. After I rebooted (again) I discovered that windows decided to simply crash upon learning that my internet connection was lost. Wow, this OS sucks. I sooooo want a new computer that I saw at best buy for my own linux machine.

I really dislike banner ads, first of all: I almost never click through them, as you may have noticed hobbiton has just begun useing popup windows on their free hosted site, sure I could pay like 7 bucks a year to keep them away, but I am lazy and poor. I am sick of popups and am worried now that yahoo advertisement sizes have grown incredibly large.

One thing I may consider is placing a banner ad at the bottom of the page and only selecting banner ads from sites that I like to visit, simply because that method would be a little easier than making a links page.

personal entry / addition

OK, I am incredibly stupid, lets just say that record of no vehicle accidents is at an end. I drove for nearly a year with nothing happening, now bam! Well, at least nothing serious happened and there was no serious damage. In the meantime I have put together a page full of quotes from me that I have jotted down on my various PDAs over the years. Quotes.

Yeah! I am back from vacation and it was great. I went out to the Denver area and visited some old freinds, I had a good time despite the long and arduous drive across Nebraska. I even got to go white water rafting for the first time, next up: kayaking. I posted some pictures from my vacation, I was planning on doing it anyways but its also at the request of a foreign friend. Photos

on games

I dont entirely understand how games have exponentially increased the requirements for propper operation. All of the latest games have stunning 3D, but they require a very advanced video card generally. Only a few years ago we had every game using software 3D rendering, none of this direct hardware stuff. The crazy thing though is that people try to remake old dos games into new possibly multiplayer games, and they require tons of RAM. There is a multiplayer version of Liero that was made, it isnt 3d or anything special like that but it ran incredibly slowely on a 450mHz computer. The original Liero ran just fine on a 486, and was amazingly fun and addictive.

I finally got Unreal Tournament which is hailed as the best multiplayer 1st Person Shooter around right now. I am beginning to realize that all of these games are exactly the same! They have all the exact same premise and weak story line. On the other hand whenever I play UT for a while I begin thinking about Tribes, yes thats right UT has better graphics but the gameplay just sucks compared to Tribes. I havent gotten to play Tribes 2 yet because it wouldnt run on my computer (ARGHH!), besides from all the errors that people were getting, I believe that Sierrra released it while it was still beta. So far as I know Tribes is the best 1st person shooter to come along so far, hands down. And as for gods-eye-view strategy games: no, not Command and Conquer, Total Annihilation was by far the best strategy game. Some people would disagree with me and claim that honor for AoE II, but having played a great many of these games I think that Total Annihilation offered the best gameplay ever in a strategy game. Think about it.

Am wonerink why am not updatink this site more often. Yah, dis is supposed to be a german accent. Though I am told that my German accent sounds very distinctly Austrian, apparently this is a bad thing according to German citizen who informed me of my accentual deficiencies.

website update!!!

Wahoo! I finally got around to doing this, I spent hours attempting to find out how to make this page look good and work in browsers other than IE. I believe the current version is acceptable, it looks better but takes a little longer to load. I have also split the rants up into seperate pages with 4 rants on a page.

- in a loosely related event - I just found where to buy Penguin Caffinated Mints locally. I have been hyped up on these things all day because I had to go in to work for the early show (4:45 AM), and didnt get much sleep the night before.

my own worst enemy

Err, well I in all sincerity meant to update this sooner, in fact I sorta did. I simply forgot to cd into the www/ dir when uploading the update via ftp. Any normal person would have taken a few seconds to look at the site online before getting up and going to eat. heh. I am very happy that I now have Unreal Tournament, I intended to play on the DHBiT server, unfortunately they use the RA mod but its a 20 meg download, on top of the 7.5 Mb patch. I have a crappy old computer for my linux box without any USB ports. My rio500 mp3 player is USB, and it can be used in linux. I would like to do a dual boot with linux on the good computer but that means that I need to buy a new HD that is big enough that I can still install all my games for windows. See my problem. Well, this rant may actually get put up when it is supposed to smile

personal note

Ok, yes, I am alive. Its been 5 days since I last wrote a rant, and I didnt feel so bad because I just started my job and dont get home till late at night and most of my creativity is sapped by then. But tonight I only worked the one late shift and chugged about 3 cans of Mt. Dew in 1 minute. I am still coming down off of that buzz. I wasnt even feeling bad about missing updates for this little graphicly challenged site, untill I went and saw geeks with guns, this site is good, not only is it amusing but it looks good, the index page is a little large to the dialup shmuck community(card carrying member). I am now ashamed at my functional yet pathetic design that is the sole result of producing this site on an old linux box. Personally, If I want to get any web-development done I have to use my windows tools, this and this. Sure Joe works good, but you cant argue with results. Perhaps my realizations of inadequacy with this site and my othersite (which I forgot to test in 16bit color before deploying DOH!), has led me to insanity of commitment to iproving this for the several obscure people that actually seem to be visiting this insane masterpiece, or perhaps it has led me to the overuse of hyperlinks for no apperant reason, or perhpas the result is my strange use of extremely long sentences that go on, and on, and on, only borken up by commas. I suppose I could have ranted about something serious but looks are all that has become important to me, perhaps I should give up this chrade of pretending to want to produce content for an audience. Wow! I saw the FF movie and wow it is a schweet film it is so much better than standard animation and the story line is actually halfway compelling despite the overbearing new-age tree hugger religion that is part of the whole point of the movie. I have noticed that this is getting to me an extrodinarily long entry, I guess I am just making up for my down time, sorry. There, I can make myself stop!

on employment

Wow! am I glad that the job market for techs isnt entirely dried up. Reports flood the internet about homeless web-workers, but there are niches out there for the technoligalclly inclined. It seems that there are plenty of businesses that just dont yet realize that they need a tech. I was recently hired for a local news station as a production assistant, I am still relatively young so I am not to worried about really high paying jobs, but for my age I am getting a great deal of experience. Most of my friends work at department stores or fast food places. At the place I was just hired they needed a web-page so the manager learned HTML(or some WYSIWYG tool) and made the web-page himself. I was impressed and hope to do some work with that project, but it made me realize that there are lots of companies out there other than dotcoms that need internet techs to do various work. Its amazing how depressed our economy got with the first sign of growing pains in a new industry.

To tell the truth im not sure what to post today im not particuarily angry about anything today. I am trying to learn some syntax for a 3d modelling program i just started using, and it is a lot of fun (POVray). Otherwise I am just trying to find some more geeks to hang out with IRC can be addicting but it may not be to socially healthy to have all communications trough it.

Oh man, the Final Fantasy movie is going to be soooo schweeet. All I have to say other than that is: TIMMMMYYYYYY!!!

on GUIs

Today Im not going to go with the expected rant on the benefits or detriments of GUIs themselves they are here and used I am going to discuss the variations. Specifcaly the Unix desktop variations. There is Gnome and there is KDE. Both suck they both continue o get steadily better with each release. The very fact that there are 2 seperate desktops which are independant and incompatible with each other, is sick and wrong. Sure its great to have options but programmers end up spending so much time trying to make programs compatible with either KDE or Gnome that the quality of the product could be lost. Personally I believe that KDE is ridiculusly ugly and inefficient, its like an old windows gui come back to haunt you. Currently it seems that gnome is the best option for a Linux envroment.

anti-MS

Yay for Microsoft free friday - http://davenet.userland.com/2001/06/13 this article has sparked discusions on a international effort to make websites not accept requests from MS IE on fridays! It sounds like a great method to get away from the Monopolys efforts to show smart tags down our throats. Well, thats enough from me, this guy rants fairly well also.

Personal Entry

Well, I have finally moved. It was rough moving on the 4th of July but at least on independence day many people have a day off of work its great to have friends and relatives that are willing to sacrafice their time and physical strength to help us out with moving. I moved out of Nebraska and back into Iowa whence I came 2 years previously. It turned out that moving to a small town in Nebraska away form any cities was a big mistake (Duh!). Now I was able to pick my intelligence back up at the border and resume a semi-normal life near civilization. I skipped a few days between rants because I was busy hauling things to our new house, and one of those things was my computer. Yesterdays post was only written yesterday I posted it today and am now commencing to produce this little note. I hope you all have a good independance day.
